Gemini-powered AI classification in Google Drive is now available in open beta.

By automating file identification and labeling across Drive, AI classification helps organizations enforce granular data loss prevention (DLP) policies at scale, establish retention rules, and utilize label metadata during audit investigations. This also becomes a critical aspect in elevating an organization’s security posture in the agentic era, preventing agentic workflows from accessing and acting autonomously on sensitive data. 

This feature leverages Gemini models to apply data classification labels to files in Google Drive. Previously, AI classification required admins to identify and manually label training files for the AI model to learn the types of data associated with each data classification level. With this new capability, Gemini models offer admins an alternative method for data classification that is faster and more efficient, eliminating the need for manual model training and replacing it with administrator-defined instructions.



In the Admin console, Gemini models interpret instructions, evaluate files, and apply appropriate data classification labels.


Administrators maintain full control of the Gemini-based data classification process. They select the label, provide Gemini with instructions, and scope the audience for the files being evaluated. For Gemini-labeled files, editors and owners of those files with the appropriate label permissions will have the opportunity to either review and accept, or modify the automatically-applied label. Audit logs capture when files are labeled, including any user acceptance or modification of a Gemini-applied label.



In the Admin console, once enabled, Workspace Admins can see metrics on the labels applied to files by Gemini.


Data classification is a critical activity for organizations that are conscious about data protection, compliance, and reporting. However, data classification can also be challenging to put into practice, particularly when it comes to accurately classifying files at scale. By using the new Gemini-based capabilities in AI classification for Drive, admins are able to achieve a higher degree of data classification accuracy at scale.

Client-side encryption (CSE) provides organizations control over access to their confidential data, with customer controlled encryption keys and data that is indecipherable to third-parties, including Google. Google Drive now supports direct file previewing for CSE files. Previously, users needed to download encrypted non-native files to their local devices to view the contents. With this capability, authorized users can immediately preview encrypted content in their web browser without leaving Drive.

This feature streamlines productivity and bolsters security by eliminating unnecessary downloads. At launch, preview is supported only on Drive, and for:

  • Encrypted PDF documents
  • Encrypted Image file formats

We are excited to introduce Room Display mode, a new dual-window experience for Google Meet on the web. Launching in beta, this feature is designed specifically for "Bring Your Own Device"  meeting spaces, where users connect a personal laptop to a shared external display, such as a TV or projector.

Historically, setting up a meeting on a shared display (e.g. in a meeting room) meant manually dragging browser windows across screens, dealing with clunky display layouts, and risking showing your browsing windows. Room Display mode removes this complexity by automatically splitting your meeting interface into two dedicated views the moment you connect your device and join the call:

  • Shared View (TV/Monitor): A clean, distraction-free, entire-screen view on your external display. It displays remote participant video tiles and shared presentations edge-to-edge. You can choose to go full screen by clicking the full-screen window button.

  • Personal View (Laptop Controller): Your laptop screen becomes a private personal view and "control center" for the meeting. In addition to your persona
    l view of the active presentation, it houses the meeting controls, peripherals selection, presentation controls, the participant roster, chat panels, and your "Ask Gemini" panel. This ensures you can manage the meeting privately without displaying your browser window or personal workspace to the entire room.

Whether you’re hosting a team sync, leading a pitch, or watching a presentation, Room Display mode makes running meetings on a shared display and collaborating in hybrid environments more seamless and professional.

Note: This requires a Chromium-based browser (such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) with Window Management permissions enabled.

  • End users: This feature will be available by default when a laptop running a Chromium-based browser is connected to an external display (set to Extended mode, not mirrored). Admins can now bulk export client-side encrypted (CSE) Slides using Vault or Data Export (takeout), and then convert those exports into PowerPoint files. This allows your organization to retain complete ownership, access, and control of sensitive data in a highly portable format.

We’re excited to announce the beta release of a new, simplified way for very small and small-sized businesses to import their users from Microsoft to Google Workspace when setting up their Workspace account for the first time.

This new feature allows these businesses and educational institutions to automatically copy their existing Microsoft users into Google Workspace. Once you connect to Microsoft, the system automatically identifies users in your Microsoft account and prepares to add them in your new Google Workspace account. This feature significantly reduces the time and effort of switching from Microsoft and helps you get your organization up and running in no time.

You can complete the import in a single click after connecting to your Microsoft business account.

Organizations that use both Google Workspace and other calendaring systems, like Microsoft Outlook, can now more easily coordinate shared resources, such as rooms, projectors, or company cars. We are introducing an open beta that allows non-Google users to book Google Workspace resources directly from their preferred calendar service.

Google Workspace admins can grant specific non-Google users or entire non-Google domains permission to book Workspace resources. Once these permissions are configured in the Admin Console, non-Google users can reserve a resource by simply adding its email address to the calendar event guest list. If the resource is configured to auto-reply, it automatically accepts or declines the invitation based on its availability and sends an email notification to the organizer.

Additionally, for organizations using both Google Workspace and Microsoft Outlook, admins can configure Calendar Interop. This allows Outlook users to find and book Workspace resources by their name and view their availability before sending an invite.

We’re introducing data loss prevention (DLP) policies for Google Calendar in beta. Currently, DLP policies protect Calendar attachments such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides in meeting invites. To further expand our data protections, administrators can now prevent sensitive data from being shared in the event details for Calendar, including event title, location, and description. 

Key functionalities include:

  • Choice of actions: Admins can choose to audit when an event is saved with sensitive content, warn users about sensitive content in their event, or block event creation or updates if a DLP policy is violated. 
  • Event details: DLP rules scan free-text fields in the event, including the event’s title, description, and location fields. 
  • Owner-based policies: Rules are applied based on the organizational unit (OU) of the owner (event organizer on primary calendars or calendar owner on secondary calendars), consistent with other Workspace DLP configurations. 
  • User notifications: With DLP policies for Calendar, users receive immediate feedback when sensitive data is detected. On the web, users see a pop-up notification explaining the issue. Admins can also customize this message with more specific details. If a meeting update is blocked on Android, iOS, or via the Calendar API, the user will receive an automated email notification explaining the policy violation and why changes to the meeting invite were not successful.

Last year, we announced the launch of the Google Classroom API Student Groups endpoints through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program (DPP). Now, Student Groups endpoints are generally available, so developers no longer need to be in the Developer Preview Program (DPP) to access them. 

Student Groups endpoints enable developers to manage student groups and group members on behalf of administrators and teachers. Specifically, developers can: 

  • Create, modify, and delete student groups within a course 
  • Add and remove members within student groups 
  • Read members of student groups

What’s changing 

We’re adding two new features to help organizations minimize the impact of ransomware attacks on personal computers. Specifically, we are adding these features in beta: 

  • Ransomware detection: When users have Google Drive for desktop installed on their computers, file syncing will be paused when ransomware is detected. The user will see a notification appear on their computer. Admins will see an alert in the Admin console security center. And notification emails will be delivered to both users and admins. 
  • File restoration: Users are able to restore their files to a previous version in Drive with ease, saving them time and money without paying a ransom. Users can select and restore multiple files prior to when ransomware infected their computer, making their files inaccessible.

You can turn it on or off at the OU level by going to Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Drive and Docs > Malware and Ransomware. The Shared Signals Framework (SSF) is a community supported initiative of the OpenID Foundation, focused on developing and maintaining a standardized protocol for cross-system communication between security platforms to share security insights and events. To support the SSF initiative, Google Workspace is implementing a SSF Receiver to ingest Continuous Access Evaluation Profile (CAEP) signals. This feature is available in closed beta for Google Workspace customers and interested partners. Google Drive is now integrated with the Workspace Events API, which allows third-party developers to create subscriptions on Drive items and receive notifications via Cloud Pub/Sub when those resources change. This offers developers a more reliable, featureful way of receiving events over the current files.watch and changes.watch methods that exist today. Beginning today, the New Data Migration service can be used to migrate files from Microsoft SharePoint Online to Google Drive. This allows admins to migrate data from SharePoint Online sites, including document libraries, folders, files and associated permissions, helping organizations transition to Google Workspace quickly and easily.

You can start and complete a migration in a few simple steps:

  • Connect to your SharePoint Online account from which you want to copy data.
  • Specify which sites you want to copy data from and which Drive folders should contain the copied data.
  • Specify users and groups whose permissions should be copied.

What’s changing 

Launching in beta, you can now view and edit client-side encrypted Microsoft Word files in Google Docs. Any changes made are saved in the original Word format. This update makes it easy for you to leverage Google Workspace with the tools and formats you already use while preserving confidentiality of your sensitive data with client-side encryption.

Note that with this release:
  • You can only view and edit .docx Word file types. Additional Word file types are not supported.
  • The maximum file size is 20MB.
  • As we continue to improve Office editing in encrypted Google Docs, you may encounter incompatibilities for certain features. Some features may not be displayed and may not be editable, but will be preserved in the document and viewable in Microsoft Office.
  • Other features may be lost or altered in the latest version of the file when it is edited in Google Docs. You will see a notification within the document if editing will cause any features to be lost.

What’s changing

Beginning today, Admins can choose from several options when exporting their organization’s data (also known as ‘takeout’). Specifically, they will be able to:

  • Export data from all or multiple services, such as Gmail, Chat, or Drive.
  • Export Drive data based on existing Drive labels
  • Export data from within a specific date range
  • Export data from selected shared drives

Why it’s important

In 2022, we introduced the ability for admins to export user generated content by organizational unit (OU) or group, and prior to that update, data export was limited to a customer’s full set of user generated content. With this update, we continue to give our customers more flexibility and specificity over the data they export, which is important as business and compliance needs evolve.
