To make it easier to create rubrics and grade in Google Classroom, educators can now instantly generate a new Classroom-ready rubric during their assignment creation workflow, using context from their assignment.

With this update, there will now be multiple ways to create and use rubrics in Classroom:

  • [New] Draft relevant Classroom rubrics from the assignment creation page: Within the “Rubrics” section, generate a new Classroom-ready rubric with help from Gemini based on their assignment. Educators can review and edit the proposed rubric criteria before adding it to the assignment, saving valuable prep time. 
  • Convert existing rubrics files from the assignment creation page: Within the “Rubrics” section, educators can select an existing rubric they have and instantly convert it to a Classroom-ready rubric.
  • Create rubric files from the Gemini tab: When planning their lessons, educators can collaborate with Gemini to draft a rubric based on information that they provide. They can then export the rubric to Sheets or Docs before attaching it to their class.

Note: This feature is only available for users over age 18.

Last year, we launched Gemini in Google Classroom to help educators save time on planning and create more engaging lessons, and later expanded Gemini in Classroom to higher education students 18 years of age and older to help them study and learn. Starting August 10, 2026, Gemini in Classroom will also be made available to K-12 and higher education students of all ages who have already been granted access to Gemini in Classroom, Gemini and Gemini Notebook by their admin, offering a guided space to interact with these tools.

In Classroom, students can access the Gemini tab to transform their class materials into interactive experiences that help them study and learn. For example, students who have access to Gemini can select course materials to create flashcards or practice quizzes with Gemini that are tailored to their class. Students with Gemini Notebook access can also sync the materials provided by their teacher to Gemini Notebook, enabling them to create interactive study guides, audio overviews, infographics, and more.



Additionally, starter prompts on the student Gemini tab can now use context from Classroom to tailor Gemini interactions specifically to students’ schoolwork. This update transforms the existing starter prompts into highly contextualized experiences, eliminating the need to go back and forth between Classroom and Gemini to get support relevant to what they’re learning in the classroom.

When a student clicks on one of these starter prompts, a new box now appears that allows them to select a specific class and assignment. The Gemini prompt will then incorporate the relevant title, assignment instructions, and curriculum materials as context directly from Google Classroom, ensuring that the resulting interaction is grounded in the student’s academic context.



If Gemini in Classroom and the Gemini app are enabled, students will also be able to access “Learn with Gemini” when they hover over any assignment in “Due Soon” on the redesigned Classroom homepage. “Learn with Gemini” helps students get guided help or create study guides, practice quizzes, and flashcards – all based on their class curriculum.



Access to the Gemini tab in Classroom is currently available globally in all Classroom-supported languages in which Gemini is also available.

Getting started

Admins:

  • Access to the Gemini tab in Classroom is On by default for teachers and students of all ages, and is controlled using the Gemini in Classroom control. If Gemini in Classroom is currently turned off for students, access will remain off for all students, including students younger than 18.
  • As an administrator of your organization's Google Accounts, you can control who is allowed to use Gemini in Google Classroom. The student capabilities are only available to users:
    • Whose role is defined as “Student” in Classroom
    • Who are in a group or OU with Gemini in Classroom set to On
    • Who are in a group or OU with Gemini Notebook set to On and/or Gemini set to On
Note: Users do not need to have both the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook set to On in order to see the Gemini tab. For example, if Gemini is set to Off, Gemini features will not be visible.


  • If you would like to disable Gemini in Google Classroom for users who are under 18 years old, you can create an OU with only those users and turn off access for that OU only. Visit the Help Center to learn about managing access to Gemini in Classroom, Gemini app, Gemini Notebook, and the option to turn these services on or off for users in your Admin console.
  • Ensure roles in Classroom are appropriately assigned to users. Learn more about teacher and student roles.

End users:

  • Navigate to the Gemini tab in the navigation bar in Google Classroom.
  • When using generated content, you should always review the outputs as AI can make mistakes and refine the output so that it fits your context and local policies.

Soon, Google Classroom will introduce a redesigned homepage globally across all editions to help teachers, students, and administrators easily find relevant content, resources, and tools tailored to their specific roles. The updated interface transforms the homepage into a dynamic, centralized hub that more easily surfaces existing information and tools that were previously located in different areas of Classroom. Users can still access classes in the side navigation panel and a dedicated classes module on the homepage.

The new experience, which will begin rolling out on July 27, 2026, is personalized based on a user's role and available features:

  • For teachers, a new dashboard gives actionable insights, highlights student classwork interactions, tracks assignment completion, and surfaces a feature spotlight to help discover instructional tools and resources.

  • For students, a dedicated ‘Enrolled’ view reminds learners of coursework that is due soon and helps them manage their deadlines.

  • For school leaders and IT administrators, the homepage provides a centralized view to monitor high-level performance analytics, access shortcuts for backend administrative settings, and discover relevant tools to support educators and staff.


Users who have multiple roles (such as a teacher taking a professional development class) can easily change their view dashboard by clicking into another role (for example, Teaching, Enrolled, or Admin). When a user loads the homepage, it returns to the previous role view.

To help users control their view and focus on what matters most to them, all new homepage modules are collapsible.



Please note that not all features and views will be available to all users. Eligibility is determined by the user’s role, feature access, account type, and settings.

  • Admins: There is no admin control for the new Classroom homepage. Gemini and Gemini Notebook features will only appear if the user is in an OU with Gemini in Classroom, Gemini app, and/or Gemini Notebook enabled. Right from Gemini Canvas, users can click on the “Share to to Classroom” button. This update allows users to enrich their classroom communication and coursework by embedding interactive materials directly into their existing workflows.

By removing the friction of exporting or linking external files, this feature helps teachers diversify their lesson materials and enables students to share creative outputs more efficiently. The integration ensures that rich, interactive media is easily accessible to everyone in the class, supporting a more engaging and dynamic digital learning environment.

  • Admins:
    • The ability to share Gemini Canvas artifacts will be ON by default and can be managed via a new Admin console setting. Read Along in Google Classroom, an AI-powered literacy tool that provides in-the-moment support to students as they read aloud, is now available to all Google Workspace for Education users at no cost. We believe this will open access to literacy tools for millions of students, and help educators and education leaders achieve better learning outcomes and progress on foundational literacy.

Read Along is designed to build students' speaking, listening, and decoding skills. It offers flexible learning modes, allowing students to practice aloud with real-time feedback, listen to stories, or enjoy books independently. To help emerging students transition from simply "learning to read" to "reading to learn," Read Along includes questions directly in the material to continuously strengthen comprehension as well as decoding support through word-breakdown.

Educators can use Read Along in Google Classroom to provide personalized reading practice for every student. The insights dashboard showing individual student and class-wide progress can help inform instruction and make it easier to create tailored reading activities based on student needs.

With this update, all Google Workspace for Education users will have access to:

  • A tailored reading experience in Google Classroom: Educators can easily create interactive reading activities right within Classroom, giving students in-the-moment support while getting actionable insights related to their reading skills.
  • Real-time reading support: Learners get help with pronunciation as they read aloud and get word breakdown support.
  • Class and student insights to inform instruction: View information on accuracy, speed, comprehension, phonics skills, and progress for individual students and the entire class.
  • An extensive content library: Choose from over hundreds of books across eight languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Urdu, Arabic, Thai, Indonesian, and Malay. This includes content such as Heggerty decodables, ReadWorks articles for higher-grade learners, and localized publisher titles like Turma da Mônica in Brazil. 
  • Multilingual support: For students learning English, the reading buddy can provide real-time support in both English and their native language so they can practice their vocabulary. Native language support is available in Spanish, Portuguese, Urdu, Arabic, Indonesian, and Malay.
  • Story creation with Gemini: With help from Gemini, educators can create differentiated reading activities tailored to phonics skills needing practice, specific topics, and reading levels.
  • Existing content: Add existing class content to better tailor real-time student support and insights with Read Along.
Advanced analytics, like viewing student’s progress over time or across assignments and the ability to extract data via BigQuery, are only available with Education Plus and Teaching & Learning add-on.

We are introducing several updates to the Gemini tab in Google Classroom designed to make its tools even more helpful for teachers. These changes make it easier for educators to collaborate with AI and create visual aids from any device, while expanding options for refining lesson plans.

Mobile availability
We know educators and students use Google Classroom on the go on their mobile devices, so we are excited to announce that the Gemini tab is now available in the Classroom Android and iOS apps, making these features more accessible to teachers and higher education students. For educators, the following features are available in the Classroom mobile app: Generate a quiz, Brainstorm project ideas, Craft a compelling hook, Tackle common misconceptions, and starter prompts for the Gemini app. All Gemini starter prompts and personal class notebooks in the student Gemini tab are available in the Classroom mobile app.

Tools to generate visual resources
Powered by Nano Banana 2, Google’s newest image generation model, these starter prompts help teachers create visuals that illustrate complex topics for students:

Educators have shared that AI is especially helpful when it understands the context of their teaching environment, from tailoring resources toward student needs or building on their existing materials. To support this, Gemini will be able to collaborate with your Google Classroom, using context from your classes to inform its outputs or help complete tasks. For example, educators can get insights on student progress and understanding, create resources and differentiated materials based on Classroom context, or get help drafting posts and assignments.

Students 18 and older can similarly use the Classroom app to stay organized across classes – from getting a list of upcoming assignments, creating study plans, doing test practice based on Classroom content, and staying up-to-date on the latest announcements. Based on your prompts, Gemini will identify when context from Google Classroom will be relevant, and use it to inform its outputs. You can also explicitly tell Gemini to use information from your Google Classroom account by typing, “@Classroom” and clicking on the Classroom app when it pops up.



For example, educators can ask Gemini to:

  • Draft communications: Draft communications and posts based on your Google Classroom information.
  • Draft differentiated assignments and plans: Help draft and update assignments, and generate timelines and structured plans, based on information and content from your Google Classroom.
  • Understand student progress and take action: Summarize who has submitted assignments, how students have done on prior assignments, and identify where students might need additional teacher support.
  • Streamline administrative tasks: Update assignment titles, descriptions, and more across multiple classes in draft mode, make seating charts, and find old assignments.

Important notes

Gemini Apps can’t perform certain actions in the Google Classroom app, like:

  • Enter grades or provide private feedback directly
  • Delete, archive, or directly post assignments or announcements (it can post to draft)

This feature will be available in English for users designated as over the age of 18 who are using a Google Workspace for Education or Business account in Classroom and Gemini. The Classroom app in Gemini does not currently support data regionalization and your usage data may be stored outside of your designated data region. Data region support for the Classroom app in Gemini is expected later this year.

  • Admins: Access to the Classroom app in Gemini will be ON by default for all Education domains and can be disabled at the OU or group level. For all other domains, access will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the OU or group level. Access can be turned on or off with a new Classroom app setting in the Gemini section of the Admin console. Building on our October launch, Gemini in Google Classroom can now help educators more easily convert rubric files and images into Google Classroom rubrics, right within the assignment creation workflow. Educators can now upload more file types, such as .jpeg and .png files. For example, by uploading a photo of a physical rubric or using existing files, Gemini in Classroom can help educators quickly generate structured, interactive rubrics within the Classroom interface. They can then make edits to the converted rubric before saving it. This Gemini-powered automation reduces manual data entry and helps educators maintain consistent grading standards across their assignments.

With this launch, rubric conversion will be controlled by the Gemini in Classroom setting in the Admin console. If Gemini in Classroom is disabled for your organization, you’ll no longer be able to convert rubrics from documents or images.

Learning standards from around the world are made available in Classroom through partnerships with 1EdTech and Common Good Learning Tools. These standard frameworks are pulled from Satchel Rosetta Exchange, a public space hosted by Common Good Learning Tools where anyone can browse various learning standard sets that leverage the 1EdTech® Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE®) standard specification. This update enables systematic tracking for standards-based learning, offering several benefits across the school community:

  • For educators and leaders: Teachers can utilize data-driven student performance analytics to adjust instruction, while education leaders with Google Workspace for Education Plus can use the "Visit a class" feature to see how coursework aligns with required standards.
  • For students and guardians: Students and guardians can see the learning goals tagged on assignments, giving them clarity for how curriculum relates to required learning milestones and targeted skill growth.

Last year, we announced that educators can use NotebookLM to create teacher-led AI experiences for students in Google Classroom, based on their class materials. Since then, students have been able to access their teachers’ interactive study guides and other learning aids created with NotebookLM for extra practice, support, and learning opportunities. Today, we’re allowing students in higher education who are 18 years of age and older to create their own notebooks for courses in Google Classroom.

From the Gemini tab in Google Classroom, students can use NotebookLM to create a personal class notebook that is grounded in the materials provided by their educator. Personal class notebooks can transform how students interact with these class resources, unlocking new ways to build understanding by converting class materials into interactive and multi-modal study tools. This can help students with:

  • Creating custom study tools: Students can use the "Studio" panel within their notebook to generate various high-value outputs, including Audio Overviews (podcast-style summaries), Video Overviews, study guides, flashcards, and interactive visual diagrams.
  • Summarizing and synthesizing: Students can quickly synthesize information across up to 50 source documents per notebook, making it easier to prepare for exams or catch up on missed lessons.
  • Direct-to-student support: By using the Gemini tab directly in Classroom, students can ask questions and get grounded answers based strictly on their class content, ensuring help is relevant and reliable.
  • Enhanced creativity: Students can go beyond text by creating infographics, slide decks, and other visual aids to help them internalize and present what they’ve learned.

We’re introducing AI-suggested feedback for written assignments in Google Classroom, a new feature designed to help educators provide high-quality, personalized support to their students more efficiently. Educators can now generate suggestions from Gemini to draft feedback that is specifically tailored to a student's work, grade level, and any specific focus area designated by the educator.

Educators have shared that personalized feedback is critical for closing learning gaps, yet it is often one of the most time-consuming tasks. By using AI to assist in drafting these comments, teachers can:

  • Manage workloads effectively: Get support in significantly reducing the hours spent giving input on written assignments.
  • Enhance student growth: Deliver the timely, specific feedback students need to build stronger self-reflection and evaluation skills.
  • Prioritize personalization efficiency: Use Gemini’s drafts as a starting point to provide high-level, empathetic guidance that might otherwise be difficult to scale across large classes.
When giving feedback in private comments on assignments in Google Classroom, educators can select “Help me write” to have Gemini suggest written feedback for the assignment. Teachers can then review, edit, and refine before sharing with students, ensuring teachers remain in control of the guidance provided while reducing the time spent on writing manual feedback.

Last year, we announced the launch of the Google Classroom API Student Groups endpoints through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program (DPP). Now, Student Groups endpoints are generally available, so developers no longer need to be in the Developer Preview Program (DPP) to access them. 

Student Groups endpoints enable developers to manage student groups and group members on behalf of administrators and teachers. Specifically, developers can: 

  • Create, modify, and delete student groups within a course 
  • Add and remove members within student groups 
  • Read members of student groups

Starting today, we're bringing audio, video, and screencast recording functionality to Google Classroom. This new functionality is designed to help transform teaching and learning through multimodality, improving communication, intake, and retention for learners.

Now, teachers and students (when permitted) will see a record button where they can initiate, record, and post audio, video, or screencasts without ever leaving Classroom.

This new recording feature will be available in several key areas:

  • Private comments: Teachers can provide personalized, faster, and friendlier feedback to students on their submissions. For example, teachers helping students with language acquisition can share pronunciation and fluency feedback, and educators of technical subjects can walk students through complex material line-by-line using their voice and screen.
  • Announcements and posts: Teachers can record audio and/or video announcements to improve engagement and connection with students. Students can also use this recording option for announcements if allowed by the teacher's controls.
  • Assignments: Teachers can record instructions for assignments, quiz assignments, materials, and questions, boosting clarity through multimodal instruction. This helps provide a pathway for every student to access instructions and content.
  • Submissions: Students can record and submit multimodal responses to assignments, quiz assignments, and questions. This allows students to show what they know in multiple and accessible ways, which can help close learning gaps and check student understanding in new ways.
This update integrates audio, video, and screencast recording directly into Classroom workflows. 

For teachers, this feature can help solve pain points like the time-consuming task of typing up feedback and a lack of personalization in typed messages, allowing them to leave feedback that is faster and more impactful. For students, it can help improve the comprehension and digestibility of feedback and helps them feel more connected and motivated. Ultimately, audio, video, and screen recording in Classroom enhances communication for real improvements to teaching and learning.

Earlier this year, we launched Gemini in Google Classroom to help educators save time on planning and create more engaging lessons. In the coming weeks, we’re expanding Gemini in Classroom to students in higher education who are 18 years of age and older to help them study and learn.

From a central destination in Google Classroom, students will be able to access learning tools available with Gemini for Education, a no-cost version of the Gemini app built for educational institutions where you get expanded access to our most capable AI model and data isn’t reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.

Students will be able to

  • Learn about a topic: Get on-demand support and explanations of challenging concepts or step-by-step guidance with Guided Learning.
  • Take a quiz: test your knowledge with personalized practice quizzes based on specific topics or class materials to help prepare for exams.
  • Practice with flashcards: Easily transform notes and class materials into custom digital flashcards for quick review.
  • Create a study guide: Make a study guide about a certain topic, or upload class notes and materials for more personalized resources.

Getting started

Gemini in Classroom is only available in English for Google Workspace for Education users over the age of 18. The student experience will be available for users whose role is defined as “Student” in Classroom, are in a higher education organization, and are in a group or OU with both Gemini and Gemini in Classroom set to On.

What’s changing 

We’re excited to announce the launch of Gem integration with Gemini Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI™). This will mean that third party Learning Management Systems (LMS) Canvas by Instructure and PowerSchool Schoology Learning will be able to use Gems. We mentioned this launch when we announced that NotebookLM was added to Gemini LTI™, and are now pleased that the Gems integration is rolling out. 

Educators could use the Gem integration to create Gems for FAQs that help students quickly find answers to common questions about assignments, and more. Students could use it to get in-the-moment assistance with real-time coaching using Gems (coming soon).
