This official feed from the Google Workspace team provides essential information about new features and improvements for Google Workspace customers.

Educators have shared that AI is especially helpful when it understands the context of their teaching environment, from tailoring resources toward student needs or building on their existing materials. To support this, Gemini will be able to collaborate with your Google Classroom, using context from your classes to inform its outputs or help complete tasks. For example, educators can get insights on student progress and understanding, create resources and differentiated materials based on Classroom context, or get help drafting posts and assignments.

Students 18 and older can similarly use the Classroom app to stay organized across classes – from getting a list of upcoming assignments, creating study plans, doing test practice based on Classroom content, and staying up-to-date on the latest announcements. Based on your prompts, Gemini will identify when context from Google Classroom will be relevant, and use it to inform its outputs. You can also explicitly tell Gemini to use information from your Google Classroom account by typing, “@Classroom” and clicking on the Classroom app when it pops up.

For example, educators can ask Gemini to:

  • Draft communications: Draft communications and posts based on your Google Classroom information.
  • Draft differentiated assignments and plans: Help draft and update assignments, and generate timelines and structured plans, based on information and content from your Google Classroom.
  • Understand student progress and take action: Summarize who has submitted assignments, how students have done on prior assignments, and identify where students might need additional teacher support.
  • Streamline administrative tasks: Update assignment titles, descriptions, and more across multiple classes in draft mode, make seating charts, and find old assignments.
For more prompts, best practices, and tips validated by trusted testers, take a look at our Classroom app onboarding guide for educators

Important notes

Gemini Apps can’t perform certain actions in the Google Classroom app, like:

  • Enter grades or provide private feedback directly
  • Delete, archive, or directly post assignments or announcements (it can post to draft)
  • Create rubrics
This feature will be available in English for users designated as over the age of 18 who are using a Google Workspace for Education or Business account in Classroom and Gemini. The Classroom app in Gemini does not currently support data regionalization and your usage data may be stored outside of your designated data region. Data region support for the Classroom app in Gemini is expected later this year.

Getting started

  • Admins: Access to the Classroom app in Gemini will be ON by default for all Education domains and can be disabled at the OU or group level. For all other domains, access will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the OU or group level. Access can be turned on or off with a new Classroom app setting in the Gemini section of the Admin console. Visit the Help Center to learn more about turning Google apps in Gemini on or off for your organization.

We’re introducing two new administrator controls for the Gemini app (gemini.google.com) that allow end users to manage their own chat activity. Admins can now configure whether users can use temporary chats and delete their conversation history.

  • Temporary chats allows users to have conversations that are not saved to their history.
  • Conversation deletion allows users to delete individual chats or their entire chat history.
These settings give organizations greater flexibility in managing data while empowering users to control their Gemini app experience.

Please note: If your organization uses Google Vault, Vault retention rules will always be honored if they are set up.

Getting started

  • Admins: These features will be ON by default and can be disabled at the domain, OU, or group level. Visit the Help Center to learn more.
  • End users: If enabled by your administrator, you can start a temporary chat or delete a chat directly within the Gemini app interface.

Google Vault now supports retention rules and litigation holds for the Gemini app on web and mobile. Previously, administrators were able to use Vault to search Gemini app conversations and export those search results. With this update, administrators can now also create, update, and delete the following for the Gemini app:

  • Default retention rules: Set default retention rules for the Gemini app for a finite or indefinite retention period.
  • Custom retention rules: Create custom retention rules for the Gemini app by organizational unit (OU) or the entire domain for a finite or indefinite retention period.
  • Litigation holds: Place holds on the Gemini app data for a specific OU or a list of users.
Google Vault is an eDiscovery and information governance tool for Google Workspace that enables customers to retain, hold, search, and export users’ Google Workspace data. With this update, customers can expand their regulatory and legal eDiscovery management to include retention and holds for the Gemini app, making it easier to comply with data obligations from a central tool.

Additional details

  • Application scope: This update applies specifically to the Gemini app (on web and mobile) and is not applicable to Gemini in Google Workspace features integrated into other apps (such as "Help me write" in Gmail or Docs), as those specific interactions are not retained in the same manner.
  • Policy precedence: Vault retention rules and holds will always take precedence over Admin console settings, user deletion settings, or user activity settings.
    • Example: If a user deletes a conversation or turns off their activity setting, but an active Vault hold requires retention, the data is hidden from the user but remains fully retained and visible to Vault administrators.
  • API support: Support for Vault API users will be available in the coming weeks.

We are introducing the ability for Workspace users on the web to share snapshots of their chats, canvases, and generated media in the Gemini app. Because this feature is powered by the same underlying technology as Google Drive, it uses the familiar, consistent sharing interface you already rely on for Google Docs and other files. You can still choose to allow conversation sharing via link.

With this update, members of your organization can easily share Gemini workflows and build on top of what others have created, scaling AI competency and collaboration across teams and enabling new ways for educators and students to teach and learn.

Getting started

  • Admins: This feature will be ON by default and can be managed via a new Admin console setting. Additionally, sharing is governed by your organization’s existing Drive sharing policies. If Drive content is set to be shareable outside the organization, your Gemini assets will be as well. Visit the Help Center to learn more.

  • End users: If enabled by your admin, you can share your Gemini conversations, canvases, and media from the web interface using the standard Drive sharing menu.

Gemini can now transform your ideas, using conversational prompts, directly into thoughtfully formatted files, such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, PDFs and more, directly in your chats with Gemini. This feature bridges the gap between brainstorming and ready-to-share files, allowing you to generate functional and downloadable documents without ever leaving the Gemini app.

This update helps users do their best work by reducing the effort of copying, pasting, and formatting text into different applications. Whether you need to export a project plan to a Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) file or a complete course syllabus to Microsoft Word (.docx), you can now move from an idea to a polished file with a single prompt. Head to gemini.google.com and simply explain the file you need.

Supported file formats include:

  • Google Workspace files (Docs, Sheets, and Slides)
  • PDF file
  • Microsoft Word (.docx)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
  • CSV file (.csv)
  • LaTeX (.tex)
  • Plain Text (.txt)
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf)
  • Markdown (.md)
Gemini currently supports generating one file per prompt.

Today, we’re bringing the Gemini app to macOS as a native desktop experience, designed to live right where you work. It’s always just a keyboard shortcut away, allowing you to quickly get the help you need without losing your focus.

Here are a few ways you can use it right now:

  • Stay in your flow: Switching between windows can be clunky and slow. Now, you can bring up Gemini from anywhere on your Mac with a quick global shortcut (Option + Space) to get help instantly. Whether you’re drafting a market report and need to verify a date, working on a research paper and need to cite a source, or building a spreadsheet and need the right formula, you can get your answer and get right back to work.
  • Share your window for instant context: With our new native experience, you can share anything on your screen with Gemini to get help with exactly what you’re looking at. If you’re reviewing a complex chart, simply share your window and ask, "What are the three biggest takeaways here?" to get an instant summary without breaking your stride.
Starting today, the native macOS app is available to Gemini users on macOS versions 15 and up, globally.

Google Workspace admins can now enable users in their organization to share their Gemini chat conversations by creating public links to share and publish. Previously, this capability was only available to users with personal Google accounts; this update expands access on web to Gemini users with a work or school account.

Creating public links to share Gemini conversations can improve collaboration, efficiency, and content sharing. Recipients do not need their own account. This feature lets you share full conversations - including prompts and responses - with a clickable URL.

Public links that were previously created in the Gemini app will continue to be accessible unless the links are deleted from the Gemini app. Learn how to delete a public link in the Gemini app.

Google Workspace admins will have a new control to allow users in their organization to share their Gemini conversations with public links.

Getting started

  • Admins: Public Gemini chat link sharing will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the domain, organizational unit (OU), or group level using a new control in the Admin console. Visit the Help Center to learn more.
  • End users: Visit the Help Center to learn more about sharing your chats in Gemini. If you choose to share a chat, anyone with the link can read the chat, reshare it with others, and, except for chats created with Gems or for users under the age of 18, continue the chat with Gemini Apps on their own. Do not create public links to chat conversations containing confidential information or any data you wouldn’t want to be seen or shared publicly.

Update (March 31, 2026): We updated this article to reflect that image generation with Nano Banana 2 is now also available to users who are under 18 years of age. Image editing with Nano Banana 2 is still currently only available to users who are 18 years or older.

Starting today, we’re rolling out Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image), our best image model yet, to Workspace customers in the Gemini app.

Nano Banana 2, which replaces our previous Nano Banana model, brings the high-speed intelligence of Gemini Flash to visual generation, making once-exclusive Pro features accessible to a wider audience, including:

  • Advanced world knowledge: Nano Banana 2 pulls from the Gemini model’s real-world knowledge base and is powered by real-time information and images from web search to more accurately render specific subjects. This deep understanding also empowers you to create infographics, turn notes into diagrams, and generate data visualizations.
  • Production-ready specs: Make attention-grabbing assets with full control over aspect ratios and resolutions—ranging from 1K for free and 2K for paid users. Your visuals will stay sharp and perfectly sized, whether you are generating a vertical social media Story or a wide-screen presentation backdrop.
  • Precision text rendering and translation: Generate accurate, legible text for infographics or marketing mockups. Users can even translate and localize text within an image to share your ideas globally.
Nano Banana 2 also dramatically closes the gap between speed and beauty, delivering high-fidelity, photorealistic imagery. Here’s what our newest model offers and has improved on from the original Nano Banana:

  • Subject consistency: Maintain character resemblance of up to five characters and the fidelity of up to ten objects in a single workflow in the Gemini app, allowing you to storyboard and build narratives without altering the appearance of your inputs.
  • Precise instruction following: With enhanced instruction following, the model adheres more strictly to your complex requests, capturing the specific nuances of your idea so the image you get is the image you asked for.
  • Visual fidelity upgrade: Nano Banana 2 delivers vibrant lighting, richer textures, and sharper details, maintaining high-quality aesthetics at the speed expected from Flash.

Getting started

  • Admins: There are no admin controls for this feature.
  • End users: Visit the Help Center for more information on generating images in Gemini.

We’re excited to announce that Google Chat is now available as a data source in the Gemini app (gemini.google.com) for Workspace customers, joining Gmail, Google Drive, and other Workspace apps. Like other Workspace connected apps in Gemini, Google Chat will be default off and can be enabled in your settings. If enabled, Gemini will be able to cross-reference your conversations in Chat to provide more informed, context-aware responses directly within your workflow.

By incorporating Google Chat into Gemini via the existing connection to Workspace apps, you can now ask Gemini to help you retrieve specific project details, summarize missed discussions, and surface information buried in your message history directly within the Gemini app.

Key capabilities include:

  • Information retrieval: Quickly find specific details, such as "Who’s the marketing lead for Project Clover?"
  • Project tracking: Ask Gemini, "What's the latest deadline mentioned for Project X?" to find dates directly from recent team discussions.
  • Quick summaries: Use prompts like "Summarize my unread chat messages from today" to get a high-level overview of what you missed.

Using text-based or image prompting, you can now generate custom 30 second soundtracks in Gemini. This new capability is powered by Lyria 3, Google’s most advanced music generation model yet.

The Gemini app facilitates new forms of musical expression by transforming prompts and images into custom soundtracks. A user might, for instance, turn a “welcome to the team” email into a track. Or, a student or educator could generate custom instrumentals for class presentations or projects. From funny jingles to lo-fi beats, just describe what you want to hear and let Gemini handle the rest.

Starting today, Workspace users can now add notebooks from NotebookLM as a source in the Gemini app. This will provide deeper, more relevant responses that are grounded in the sources in your notebook. This functionality is already available to consumers, and we’re excited to share that it is now expanding to Enterprise and Education users of all ages.

NotebookLM is a powerful tool for synthesizing information from vast document collections, including PDFs, Google Docs, and more, all with clear, citable sources. By adding notebooks directly into Gemini, users can seamlessly build upon this deep, specific knowledge base and get more relevant responses with the full power of Gemini’s advanced conversational and content-creation capabilities.

Standardized tests are often a critical component of the college application process. To support high school and college prep students during these critical milestones, we’re launching practice tests in Gemini: full-length, on-demand practice exams available at no cost. Available now, practice tests support the SAT to start, with more tests coming in the future. To try it out, tell Gemini, “I want to take a practice SAT test”.

To ensure they prepare you for the actual exam, we have grounded practice tests in rigorously vetted content from leading education companies like The Princeton Review, to build a best in class experience for learners coming to Gemini. This helps ensure that you’re not just practicing — you’re preparing with material that more closely resembles what you’ll see on test day.

When you complete a practice test in Gemini, you’ll receive immediate feedback highlighting where you excelled and where you might need to study more. For anything you don’t understand, you can ask Gemini to explain the correct answer. By helping you identify specific knowledge gaps, Gemini empowers you to turn those insights into action — creating a customized study plan that can help you walk into your exam with confidence.

What’s changing

We’re expanding image generation powered by Nano Banana in the Gemini app to Google Workspace users of all ages.

This update brings a highly requested and powerful creative tool to younger users, helping them visualize ideas and bring their work to life. For example, a student working on a presentation can now ask Gemini to "create an image of a cell's mitochondria for my biology project" or "generate a picture of a public square in ancient Rome."

Expanding access to this feature provides a more consistent creative experience for all Workspace users.

Users under 18 years old can improve upon their generated images with follow-ups, but cannot edit them directly or use uploaded images for image generation. To prepare to bring image generation to younger users, we conducted rigorous testing specific to users under 18. We’ve trained Gemini to recognize areas that are inappropriate to youth, and implemented safety features and guardrails, including content filters, to help prevent unsafe content, such as illegal or age-gated substances, from appearing in its responses to these users.  As a reminder, these filters aren't perfect, so please grant access as appropriate for different age levels. Teachers and staff should continue to help students use Gemini responsibly.

Note: Workspace customers will get promotional access to higher usage limits of Nano Banana Pro in these apps for at least 60 days, allowing users to experiment with these features. Per-user usage limits will apply afterward; we’ll provide more information in a future update prior to any changes. At this time, image generation and editing is only available to users over the age of 18.

Developers and business teams can also access Nano Banana Pro on Vertex AI, and soon in Gemini Enterprise. Learn more.
