What’s changing

We’re adding two new features to help organizations minimize the impact of ransomware attacks on personal computers. Specifically, we are adding these features in beta:

  • Ransomware detection: When users have Google Drive for desktop installed on their computers, file syncing will be paused when ransomware is detected. The user will see a notification appear on their computer. Admins will see an alert in the Admin console security center. And notification emails will be delivered to both users and admins.
  • File restoration: Users are able to restore their files to a previous version in Drive with ease, saving them time and money without paying a ransom. Users can select and restore multiple files prior to when ransomware infected their computer, making their files inaccessible.

Getting started

Admins:

  • Ransomware detection will be on by default for users in your organization. You can turn it on or off at the OU level by going to Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Drive and Docs > Malware and Ransomware. If ransomware is detected for your users, admins will receive an email and get an alert in the Alert center.
  • Drive file restoration will be on by default. You can turn it on or off at Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Drive and Docs > Drive file restoration
  • Install the latest version of Drive for desktop on user computers (v.114 or later) to enable the detection alerts (syncing will still be paused on older versions).
  • Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing ransomware detection and file restoration for your organization

What's changing

In order to improve the experience of admins managing Google Meet’s Enterprise Content Delivery Network (Meet eCDN) rules, we’re updating how the “Custom Rules” peering policy works in some cases, and how assigned networks are surfaced in the MQT eCDN network table. Understanding these changes will allow customers to make full use of those improvements.

Overlapping IP ranges

Please note you will only see this change if you have defined overlapping IP ranges. For example, if you have defined a large range that’s allowed but including some smaller ranges that should be blocked within it. If you have non-overlapping ranges only, you won’t be affected by this change.

Viewers with the “custom rules” peering policy will be matched against a list of IP ranges and their respective peering configuration (allowed or blocked). This is done by checking all listed ranges in order from top to bottom. Previously, any blocking match would supersede an allowing match, even if the allowing match came first. We’re removing the priority for blocking changes to simplify how matches are determined.

Example for a viewer with private IP address 10.0.0.30:

Scenario 1:

Viewer 1 private IP: 10.0.0.30
Viewer 2 private IP: 11.0.0.30

Custom rules list:
  • 10.0.0.0 - 10.0.0.255: allowed
  • 11.0.0.0 - 11.0.0.255: blocked
Fallback policy: blocked

Before:
  • Viewer 1 allowed since one allowed match
  • Viewer 2 blocked since one blocked match

After:
  • Same results, no changes in this scenario, since there are no overlapping IP ranges.

Scenario 2:

Viewer 1 private IP: 10.0.0.30
Viewer 2 private IP: 11.0.0.30

Custom rules list:
  • 10.0.0.0 - 10.0.0.255: allowed
  • 10.0.0.0 - 15.0.0.0: blocked
Fallback policy: blocked

Before:
  • Viewer 1 blocked, since one allowed and one blocked match, and blocked matches have higher priority.
  • Viewer 2 blocked, since one blocked match.

After:
  • Viewer 1 allowed, since the first match encountered (top to bottom) was to allow the IP.
  • Viewer 2 blocked, since the only matching rule was blocking the IP.

Scenario 3:

  • Viewer 1 private IP: 10.0.0.30
  • Viewer 2 private IP: 11.0.0.30

Custom rules list:
  • 10.0.0.0 - 15.0.0.0: blocked
  • 10.0.0.0 - 10.0.0.255: allowed
Fallback policy: blocked

Before:
  • Viewer 1 blocked, since one allowed and one blocked match, and blocked matches have higher priority.
  • Viewer 2 blocked, since one blocked match.

After:
  • Viewer 1 blocked, since the first match encountered (top to bottom) was to block the IP.
  • Viewer 2 blocked, since the only matching rule was blocking the IP.
Please note that smaller IP ranges should be listed before large ranges containing them (top-to-bottom).

Multiple private IP addresses are now supported
Please note that the following change will only materialize if your viewers’ devices have multiple private IP addresses configured on their network interfaces (typically one IPv4 and one IPv6 address).

Previously, eCDN clients would detect their private IP address and always prioritize IPv4 over IPv6. Also, only a single IP address could be detected and sent for matching against custom rules. We’re changing this so that all private IPs configured on the device’s interfaces will be used for matching. To ensure top-to-bottom evaluation, the first rule matching any detected private IP addresses will be used.

Renaming Random peering policy
The policy previously called Random peering policy is now called Testing peering policy. This policy is primarily intended for test purposes and is not designed to provide full performance in production.

Meet Quality Tool improvements
Viewers with the Testing peering policy will now be represented in the Meet Quality Tool eCDN table. Previously this table would only show viewers per configured network if the Custom Rules peering policy was used.

What’s changing

Developers can use two new features to create more engaging Chat apps. Specifically, we are adding:
  • A carousel widget: With this new carousel widget, you'll be able to interact with more complex and organized information in a horizontally scrollable carousel.
  • Markdown support: The new Markdown support for text formatting will allow developers to specify markdown instead of converting all text to HTML.
  • Lists and code blocks: You’ll now be able to add ordered, unordered, and nested lists, and code blocks to cards.

Why you’d use it:

The carousel widget provides a powerful tool for presenting complex information in an organized, scrollable, and compact format. Developers can use it to display product listings, multiple data points, or different options within a single card, creating a much more efficient and professional-looking user experience.

Markdown support can help simplify the process to build cards, and is especially critical to developers who are building AI agents. The standard output from many LLMs is markdown. Now, instead of converting the markdown to HTML, developers can now pass the entire markdown to Chat which will handle and render the text correctly.

Lists and code blocks are essential building blocks to enable rich display of information, enhancing readability and comprehension for users. They unlock critical use cases, such as providing structured data, displaying programming examples, and organizing complex details.

The carousel widget enables scrolling through information in an efficient and engaging manner

Markdown support enables easier to use text formatting while list and code block support enables richer text format

What’s changing

We’re introducing an owner role in Google Chat spaces in addition to managers and members. By increasing the number of roles, it will be easier to share the tasks associated with managing spaces with the right colleagues. For example, managers will be able to help owners with some space administration tasks, while owners will retain full control over the space.

Specifically:

  • Existing space managers will now be owners. Owners will retain full control over the space.
  • A new manager role will be added. Managers will have most of the same permissions as owners, but will not be able to delete the space, or upgrade users to owners.
  • The member role will remain unchanged.

Both owners and managers will be able to control which roles (members, managers, or owners) have which permissions in the space settings, such as who can use the ‘@all’ function, add apps, or turn history on or off.

Update (Oct 16): We updated the "Availability" section of this post to reflect the accurate edition availability for the feature. Previously, some editions were listed incorrectly.

What’s changing

Last year we introduced conditional notifications in Google Sheets, which allow users to create custom rules in spreadsheets that send email notifications when certain criteria are met. Now we are expanding rule limits for conditional notifications from 10 to 20 rules per spreadsheet. For example, users can choose to be notified when a given task’s status changes or when they are added as an assignee. By expanding the rule limit per spreadsheet, users can take advantage of the feature more frequently and for a wider range of use cases.

Users can customize up to 20 rules that outline the criteria for when an email is sent

When rule conditions are met, recipients will receive emails informing them of the change

A few months ago, we expanded Gemini in Classroom to help educators use AI for their common teaching tasks. Today, we’re making it possible for educators to use Google’s NotebookLM and Gems to create teacher-led AI experiences for students of all ages in Google Classroom.

Now, educators can instantly create interactive AI learning experiences for students using NotebookLM and Gems right from Google Classroom – and using their class materials. They can then be assigned to students for extra practice, support, and learning opportunities:

  • Using NotebookLM, educators can select resources from their class to instantly create an interactive study guide and other learning aids like podcast-style audio overviews, mind maps, and more – grounded only in the materials educators upload. See examples

  • Educators can create a Gem, which is a custom version of Gemini, for their students to interact with. Teachers can select class materials to inform a new Gem, whether they create one from scratch or select one of the templates in Classroom (Study partner, Quiz me, Brainstorm partner, or Real-world connector). Because Gemini is informed by learning science research through LearnLM, educators’ Gems will lean into best-in-practice pedagogical behaviour as students interact with them – helping students to better understand concepts and test their knowledge, rather than just give them the answer. What’s changing

Earlier this year, we made it easier to generate charts and insights using Gemini in Google Sheets. Building on that momentum, we’re excited to announce a significant enhancement to formula generation in Gemini for Sheets. Specifically, we've upgraded Gemini to include detailed natural language formula explanations, provide formula error explanation and self-correction, and to output multiple formula options.

With these updates, Gemini can provide a full, reasoned response, making formula generation smarter and more resilient, and helping users to understand the formulas and calculations happening in their sheets.

1. Detailed natural language formula explanations:
Complex formulas can now be returned with step-by-step explanations of how they work. This improves user understanding and builds trust, making it easier to learn and adapt formulas for future use. If Gemini doesn’t provide an explanation as part of the response, you can always ask in your next query how the generated formula works.

2. Error explanation and self-correction:
Gemini can now explain why a formula failed (e.g., "the date in A1 is formatted as text") and, in a follow-up turn, use the error message to generate a corrected formula that solves the underlying issue.

3. Multiple formula options:
For more complex tasks or when there are several ways to achieve a result, Gemini can now provide multiple formulas.

Getting started

  • Admins: To access Gemini in Workspace apps, users need to have smart features and personalization turned on. Admins can turn on the personalization setting for their users in the Admin console.
  • End users: You can access Gemini for Sheets in the side panel by clicking on “Ask Gemini” (spark button) in the top right corner of Sheets. Visit the Help Center to learn more about collaborating with Gemini in Sheets.

What’s changing

To simplify the admin experience for creating rules and monitoring alerts, we are combining reporting rules with activity rules:

Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Education Plus, Cloud Identity Premium, Chrome Enterprise Premium and Enterprise Standard customers will retain all the functionality of the activity rules experience and can now also create rules without thresholds. Thresholds are applied cumulatively across user actions, not on a per-activity basis.

New threshold mode, which triggers rule every time the event occurs

For Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, and Enterprise Essentials customers, all existing reporting rules will automatically be converted to activity rules. Admins gain the ability to configure notification frequencies and access more descriptive alerts. However, applying thresholds and actions to rules are not available for these Workspace editions.

Admins will now be able to set notification frequency to limit the number of alerts or emails they receive

Why it matters

Reporting rules inform admins what happened, while activity rules help admins control what happens. By combining reporting rules with activity rules, admins receive the benefits of a more streamlined workflow with additional ways to work with rules and gain insights from more detailed reporting.

Additional details

Additionally, “Reporting rules” will be shown as “Activity rules” in various locations within the Admin console, including the “Add rules” user interface at Security > Investigation tool > Create activity rule

Getting started

Admins:
  • Visit the Help Center to learn more about creating and managing activity rules
  • With this change, admins with the “Reports” privilege have automatically been assigned the “Activity Rules View” and “Activity Rules Manage privileges”. Super admins have these privileges assigned by default. These privileges can also be assigned to a custom admin role.
End users:
  • There is no end user action required.

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we announced expanded access to Google Vids, bringing basic access to Google Vids to all Google Workspace for Education users. Now, we’re excited to announce the following AI features are available to users with an Education Plus or Teaching & Learning add-on license for a limited time*:

  • Read-along mode in teleprompter
  • AI voice overs
  • Text to image
  • Replace or expand image background with AI-powered image editing
  • Help me create (plan your video story)
  • Transcript trim

With access to these features, educators and students can generate custom images and video clips directly from a simple text description, add professional touches like background removal for images & AI-generated title cards, and choose from a library of preset voiceovers to give any project a polished narration.

Additionally, access to the Veo 3 model in Vids (to generate a video based on a prompt or image), AI avatars and Slides to Vids with Gemini (includes scripts, AI voice overs & background music) is planned to be available to Education Plus and Teaching and Learning users by the end of this year.
